The Two Failed Approaches

Pre-open friction (One Sec, Opal): You try to open Instagram. A screen asks you to breathe. You close it and open Instagram anyway. A 2023 PNAS study found this reduces openings 57 percent — for six weeks. Then the effect vanishes. The friction becomes annoying, not effective.

Hard blocks (Freedom, AppBlock): Instagram is locked. You cannot open it. This triggers reactance — the psychological rebellion against constraint. You find workarounds. You disable the block. You feel controlled, which makes the app more desirable.

Both approaches fight the wrong battle. They try to stop you from starting. The real problem is stopping once you've started.

The Third Way: Mid-Session Interrupt

PullBack does not stop you from opening Instagram. It lets you open it, scroll, reply, laugh — then auto-closes the app after the timer you set expires.

This is a mid-session interrupt. The science behind it: your brain generates start signals easily. Stop signals, not so much. PullBack supplies the stop signal externally.

Anthropologist Natasha Schull, in her book Addiction by Design, documents how slot machines and social feeds use the same mechanism: variable-ratio reinforcement that creates a dissociative state she calls "the zone." In the zone, the concept of stopping does not exist. The way out is an external signal.

The Mechanism

PullBack uses Android Usage Access to detect when a target app enters the foreground. A timer starts. At expiry, we overlay a brief "Pulled back" screen. Two seconds later, the app is closed. You are at your home screen.

The reopen friction is higher than the continue-scrolling friction. You have to find the app icon, tap it, wait for it to load. That gap is where the impulse dies.

Less than other methods. You do not have to resist opening the app. You just have to let the timer do its job.

FAQ

Is this just another screen-time app?

No. Screen-time apps track usage and send reminders. PullBack actually closes the app when your timer expires. The exit is automatic, not optional.

Does it work on iPhone?

No. PullBack is Android-only. Apple does not allow apps to close other apps.

Will I just reopen the app immediately?

Sometimes. But each reopen requires a conscious decision. Research shows that adding even small friction between impulse and action reduces repetitive behavior. The interrupt is not a wall. It is a speed bump.

Can I override it?

Yes. Master pause toggle. Use it when you need to be in the app.

Is my data sold?
